Daleen’s academic journey began with her undergraduate and postgraduate training as a teacher at the University of the Western Cape. This laid the foundation for her subsequent career as an educator, which she pursued for a decade. Her passion for understanding human behavior and making a positive impact led her to transition into the role of a school psychologist, where she could work directly with children, parents, and communities. During her fifteen-year tenure in this role, she completed her Honours and Masters in Psychology at the University of Johannesburg, further enriching her knowledge and skills.
One of the focal points of Daleen’s work was the impact of attachment on child development, a subject that she pursued through research at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her commitment to community psychology manifested in her involvement with organizations such as the Coronationville Training Centre, where she engaged in governance, social justice initiatives, educator training, and child assessment. Her dedication extended to facilitating the establishment of a Senior Special School to cater to adolescents with special educational needs, showcasing her determination to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all.


Daleen’s contributions as a community psychologist extended to her role as the supervising psychologist for the Salvation Army’s Carl Sithole Centre in Soweto. Under her guidance, the center expanded its services to include a Counseling Centre and a School for children with learning abilities, showcasing her dedication to creating supportive environments for individuals facing challenges.
Her pursuit of knowledge culminated in the completion of her Ph.D. in Psychology in 2000 from the University of Johannesburg. Subsequently, in 2002, Daleen embarked on a career at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she currently serves as a Senior Lecturer. Here, her passion for research and teaching continues to shape her practice, allowing her to inspire and educate future generations.
